Very Good, Very Expensive
Ribbon Microphones are another vintage microphone technology. Fairly rare, Ribbon microphones are by and large the most fragile or delicate and must be handled with utmost care. With the exception of some models, ribbon microphones are mostly very expensive. The associated high cost and delicateness of ribbon microphones are the reasons why they are reserved only for very select applications. Ribbon microphones are known for their distinct high quality sound with exquisite warmth clarity and sensitivity not found on dynamic and condenser microphones. Naturally Bi-Directional, ribbon microphones picks up sounds proportionately from both sides of the diaphragm.
Ribbon microphones are best used for recordings requiring very high quality sounds. Perfect for recording acoustic instruments, vocals and sometimes direct to cabinet or in front of an instrument amplifier's speaker cabinet. Although ribbon microphones are very good in picking up sounds directly in front of a speaker cabinet, it must not be positioned too close to the speakers due to the fact that most of them will not handle very high sound pressure levels. Ribbon microphones are also excellent for capturing ambient sounds. They can be used as an overhang or overhead mic for recording drums, grand pianos, singing choir and the live orchestra.
Ribbon Microphones uses a thin (2) diaphragm usually made of aluminum or nanofilm ribbon connected to a movable coil that produce (4) Audio signal as it moves back and forth between the poles of the (3) permanent magnet. As (1) sound waves hits the diaphragm, the pressure makes the ribbon to move. Current is produced at right angles to both the ribbon's velocity and magnetic field direction. The current is equal to the particle velocity of the incoming sound wave.
The electric current produced by older model ribbon microphones are very low compared to newer models. A step up transformer was used to increase the current or voltage output and also the output impedance. The latest ribbon microphone models uses better magnets and more effective step-up transformers that produces higher output levels that rivals dynamic microphones.
