PROAUDIO POWER AMPLIFIERS
Get ready to flex those muscles
|
 |
Power amplifiers also known as “Power Amps” are the muscles behind every proaudio sound system. Power amplifiers are electronic devices that receives low level micro watts audio signals also known as line level signals coming from preamp output like unpowered mixers.
|
Power amplifiers then boost, beef up, intensifies or in more obvious similar term “amplifies” ( thus the name amplifier ) these low level line audio signals to a more suitable level ( from 10's to 1000's of watts ) for driving loudspeakers.
In the past, power amplifiers are based on vacuum tubes also known as valves. Vacuum tube based power amplifiers, according to most audiophiles, sounds a lot better than modern transistor based amplifiers. They call it “warm tube sound”.

But due to the cost and longevity of vacuum tubes, most power amplifiers used today are solid state ( meaning transistor based). Modern solid state power amplifiers sounds a lot better than early models due to improvement in transistor design and technology.
Example of this improved transistor amplifier design are the Class-D power amplifiers which uses switching mode transistors instead of linear mode transistors making them more efficient and requires no heavy and bulky heat sinks.
Modern solid state power amplifiers also produce higher output levels than valve amplifiers, output levels that can reach as high as 10,000 watts or more, thus making them perfect for driving the loudest speakers on earth.

Although most power amplifiers today are solid state, vacuum tube amplifiers are making a come back. Modern vacuum tube amplifiers are mostly manufactured as audiophile grade power amplifiers used by most audiophiles for their private music rooms driving insanely expensive loudspeakers.
Modern vacuum tube amplifiers are also found integrated in some guitar cabinets also known as guitar amps. Most guitarist prefer to use tube guitar amps because of their perceived warm smooth tone or sound.

Power amplifiers are used in many applications including public address systems, house of worship, concert sound reinforcement, theaters, studios and mobile sound systems for musicians and djs.
